* These classrooms are equipped with a single computer whose screen is projected on the wall (See below " Single Receiving Stations").

Each classroom is equipped with 15 multimedia computers, a wireless local network, a satellite receiver with parabolic antenna, a video projector, a set of loudspeakers and allows satellite transmission and reception.

Satellite transmissions can be received and displayed by a video projector or on all the computers of the room (in this case, the use of headphones helps the students to follow the lesson). In the first case, the students can use their computers during the lesson, to put directly in practice what is shown by the teacher. In the second case, a single, different lesson for each student at the same time is virtually possible.

Besides the satellite reception or the transmission of lessons and other events, the multimedia room allow also other uses:

• deferred reception through Internet, at any time, of previous
lessons/events, by contacting a specifically developed web-based
event repository service
• local use of learning media and contents (audio, video, etc.)
and web browsing
• videoconferencing between all rooms of the CSS and other
external locations

The use and management of each site is regulated by specific agreements between the University of Lecce and the hosting organization. When not needed by the scheduled activities of distance education or other events, the hosting institution can use the multimedia classrooms for other purposes or activities.

Single Receiving Stations

In addition to the multimedia rooms spread all over the Salento region, the CSS system give the possibility to setup in a very quick and simple way single receiving stations, made by the satellite receiver and a computer. Public administrations, private companies or single users can borrow a computer and a satellite receiver from CSS and, with the addition of a parabolic antenna, can set up a fully operating receiving station. The availability of a video projector would permit to share the event with many people.
Considering that many schools or local administrations possess a parabolic antenna and/or a video projector for other purposes, the availability on 50 spare satellite receivers for single stations allows to greatly extend the services to a wider geographic area and to a larger number of users. It will be possible to broadcast a considerable number of learning, educational or cultural events such as master courses, postgraduate courses, seminars and conferences.
