Project: Completamento e potenziamento del Centro
di Formazione a Distanza Satellitaria dell'Università di
Lecce started in 2003 and ended in December 2005. The
project, which was co-financed by the Italian Ministry of
Education, University and Research (MIUR) and by the
European Fund for Regional Development (FESR), brought to
the realization of:
• n. 8 multimedia rooms equipped with satellite
receiving and transmitting apparatuses and tools,
distributed across the entire Salento territory
• n. 10 satellite routers based in the LRP standard
• post-production system for lessons and other events
• video serving system for deferred lesson download
• remote control system for remote multimedia rooms
management
• n. 50 satellite receivers for single receiving
stations
• implementation of audio/video signal
encoding/decoding and encryption/decryption protocols
• implementation of COPS (Common Open Policy Service)
protocol, based on the IETF (Internet Engineering Task
Force) standard
• set-up of a web-based e-learning system (LMS) for
the management of distance learning services and contents
The project was co-financed within the Programma Operativo
Nazionale "Ricerca, Sviluppo Tecnologico, Alta
Formazione”, Asse II “Rafforzamento ed apertura
del sistema scientifico e di alta formazione”, Misura
II.2 – Azione b.
Project:
Sostegno al funzionamento
dell'Infrastruttura per la Formazione a Distanza
Satellitare dell'Università Salentina. The project results
from an interaction between the University of Lecce and the
"Consorzio Universitario Interprovinciale Salentino"
(CUIS), within the collaboration framework
between University and Local Authorities for the
development of the Salento territory.
The project consists in the strengthening of the receiving
structures of the "Campus Satellitare Salentino" and the
support to the realization of learning and cultural
activities transmitted through the satellite system. The
project will allow the Salento community to get the best
benefits from the CSS e-learning system, in particular for
what concerns the academic education and the refresher
courses for human resources of public administrations and
private companies.
Project
MODUS - Multimedia Operative
Distance-learning Services for Universities and Schools
The project, co-financed by the European Space Agency
(ESA), started in March 2000 and ended in August 2001.
Together with the University of Lecce, other partners in
the project were: Space Software Italia, Alenia Spazio,
Espresso and Clio. The project was the firs experiment of
satellite based e-learning done by the University of Lecce,
which introduced the dual transmission modality (satellite
- terrestrial) for the delivery of the lessons and the
complete integration with Internet standards and protocols.
Project
ESMEE - Earth and Space Multimedia systems
Enhancements and Extensions. The project, co-financed by
the European Space Agency (ESA), started in December
2002 and ended in July 2004. The private company Clio
was project partner of the University of Lecce. ESMEE is
the natural prolongation and further development of the
MODUS project. Several important improvements have been
realised for the satellite transmission of audio and
video, the most important of which are the "digital
blackboard" and the synchronisation of web pages from
the teacher to the students. Improvements at networking
level were the implementation of Quality of Service in
the end-to-end transmission, to ensure a high quality of
data encryption/decryption and satellite transmission.
On the receiving side a prototype of cost-effective
Linux based satellite receiver was developed and the
user interface was furthermore improved.
